Sustainability to financial realities: A comparative study of renewable energy's impact on financial performance
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 2024) Chlyeh, Dounia; Bayraktar, Erkan; Yılmaz, Mustafa Kemal; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Zaim, Selim; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü
This study examines the impact of renewable energy (RE) performance on companies' financial performance, primarily focusing on RE-related sustainable development goals (SDGs) and environmental factors. We analyze a sample of 2,737 companies across 47 countries from 2009 to 2018 using panel data analysis. Our results suggest that the effect of RE performance can be understood through three phases: policies adopted, targets established, and actions implemented. Interestingly, RE policies negatively impact profitability due to the substantial costs incurred by companies. Moreover, RE-related SDGs are found to affect companies' financial performance adversely. However, environmental factors demonstrate a positive and significant impact on corporate financial performance, which is observed consistently across developed and emerging countries. Furthermore, RE performance targets and actions have a significant positive impact, specifically in developed countries. This highlights the complex relationship between RE initiatives and financial outcomes, highlighting differential effects across various stages of implementation and geographic contexts.

ESIB’s antecedents: An analytic hierarchy process application in the manufacturing industry in Albania
(MDPI, 2023) Malaj, Ardita; Zaim, Selim; Bayyurt, Nizamettin; Tarım, Merve; Zaim, Selim; Lisansüstü Eğitim Enstitüsü, İşletme Ana Bilim Dalı
This study examined factors that might motivate employees to engage in social innovation. The objectives of this study were to identify the relative importance of factors that impact Employee Social Intrapreneurial Behavior (ESIB) in the manufacturing sector in Albania using an AHP approach and to select the best practice that can improve Employee Social Intrapreneurial Behavior (ESIB) on a company basis in the same sector by merging a linguistic method with the AHP approach. A questionnaire was designed to collect expert viewpoints. A standardized AHP scale ranging from 1 to 9 was used in the questionnaire. Fifteen managers and experts from four important manufacturing companies in Albania (Everest Shpk., Kamëz, Albania; Lufra Shpk., Lushnje, Albania; Ajka Shpk., Lushnje, Albania and F&M Shpk., Tirane, Albania) were contacted, and eleven of them expressed an interest in engaging in our study by ranking the importance of various criteria and sub-criteria. The findings suggest that the sub-components of the internal factor, such as superior relationship quality and expected image gains, have a combined importance of 50% in the local weights in the Albanian context. The two sub-components mentioned above remain significant in the analysis of global weights, accounting for 41% of global influence...

(Springer, 2024) Acar, Mehmet Fatih; Torgalöz, Alev Özer; Eryarsoy, Enes; Zaim, Selim; Ruel, Salomée; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü
This study investigates the impact of intangible resources such as adhocracy culture (ADC), information sharing with suppliers (IS), and supplier trust (ST) on supply chain viability (SCV) under high inflation environment. To do this, a conceptual model is developed to analyze the associations between these suggested variables. Using on a cross-sectional survey, data are collected from 216 supply chain (SC) and production practitioners based in Türkiye who are medium- to senior-level managers. To analyze our theoretical model, we processed our data and model using lavaan package in R. The results show a significant relationship between ADC and SCV. Additionally, both of IS and ST capabilities are found to have a strong mediating effect on the ADC and SCV relationship. The results of this study will provide insight for managers and researchers to prevent the negative effects of SC disruptions due to the high inflation or other type of stress tests. Extant research has investigated the SCV with different crises like COVID-19 pandemic however, the study is the first research that examines SCV under high inflation stress test. Moreover, ADC, IS and ST have not widely appeared in SCV literature. In this regard, this research also contributes to the ongoing efforts of investigating the antecedents of SCV.

(Taylor and Francis, 2024) Kahveci, Eyüp; Avunduk, Zehra Binnur; Daim, Tuğrul; Zaim, Selim; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü
We explore the impact of COVID-19 on small- and medium-sizedenterprises (SMEs) and examine how crisis management strate-gies, particularly related to flexibility and digitalization, haveinfluenced their responses during and after the pandemic. Inthis regard, we investigate the relationships between strategicflexibility, digitalization, digital technology adoption, COVID-19 perception, and firm strategy after the pandemic by specifi-cally incorporating the mediating role of the crisis responsestrategy. Based on a survey of 206 Turkish SMEs in manufactur-ing and service industries, our research employs structural equa-tion modeling using Smart PLS. Our findings indicate that crisisresponse strategies play a significant role in shaping the firmstrategy after COVID-19, mediating the impact of strategic flex-ibility, digitalization, digital technology adoption, and COVID-19 perception. The findings highlight the importance of crisisresponse strategies—including optimizing business models, developing marketing channels, investing in technologicalinnovation, diversifying into new business areas, and integrat-ing the supply chain—during the COVID-19 period. These stra-tegies are crucial influencers in shaping the firm strategies ofSMEs beyond the pandemic. In particular, SMEs demonstrateadaptation by reassessing and restructuring their product port-folios, expanding their presence in regional markets, and estab-lishing strategic collaborations to thrive in the evolving businesslandscape.

Building higher value-added firm practices in challenging contexts: Formal networks and talent management in Turkey
(SAGE Publications, 2024) Demirbağ, Mehmet; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Wood, Geoffrey; Glaister, Alison J.; Zaim, Selim; Nair, Smitha R.; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü
Where do high-impact human resources management practices thrive, and how do they make a difference in environments with limited institutional support? This study delves into the realm of talent management (TM) in Turkey, where institutional coverage is incomplete and unstable. Drawing on survey data, we explore the conditions under which TM succeeds, supplementing previous research on internal networks by examining the impact of external networks that encompass the entire firm. We find that when firms have closer ties with customers, suppliers and competitors (and hence, the basis for formal network tie building), TM is more prevalent and more likely to be successful. While conventional wisdom in comparative institutional literature suggests that such dense ties might be less effective in emerging markets owing to the absence of advanced complementarities found in mature economies, our study challenges these assumptions. In the eyes of managers, TM is not merely a tool to overcome disadvantages; it is perceived as a source of opportunities. This prompts a critical question: what specific advantages does the emerging economy system confer on firms embracing TM? Our study seeks to unravel these dynamics and contribute to a deeper understanding of the interplay between institutional contexts and TM.

Unveiling the drivers of global logistics efficiency: Insights from cross-country analysis
(MDPI, 2024) Bayraktar, Erkan; Eryarsoy, Enes; Kosanoglu, Fuat; Acar, Mehmet Fatih; Zaim, Selim; Zaim, Selim; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü
This study presents a novel approach to assess countries’ relative logistics performance differentials and identifies the underlying drivers using a data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach. The findings offer strategic insights and provide nations with valuable guidance in navigating the dynamic landscape of global logistics competitiveness. Recognizing the pivotal role of logistics in fostering economic activity and contributing to sustainability, we utilize the Logistics Performance Index (LPI) within the DEA model to gauge efficiencies at the country level and scrutinize influencing factors. Our findings indicate that international shipment practices in the last decade, as well as tracking and tracing recently, no longer contribute to the competitiveness of the countries, despite their potential for improvement. The overall change in logistics efficiency during the last decade remained relatively marginal, primarily driven by the frontier-shift effect. However, notable disparities among the country performance groups, particularly in adopting technological advancements, are manifested in the frontier-shift effect. Countries with lower logistics performance should prioritize addressing structural challenges related to customs, infrastructure, quality of logistics services, and timeliness. Medium-performance countries, while benefiting from a focus on customs, tracking and tracing, and timeliness in the early 2010s, are advised to align their efforts with high-performance countries by emphasizing managerial aspects in recent times.

Link between digital technologies adoption and sustainability performance: Supply chain traceability/resilience or circular economy practices
(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2024) Duman Altan, Aylin; Beyca, Ömer Faruk; Zaim, Selim; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü
Technological progress and digitalization have ushered in significant transformations in business strategies. At present, research is scarcely focused on the influence of the adoption of digital technologies (DTs) on establishing comprehensive relationships within the context of a circular economy (CE), and the supply chain (SC) framework to contribute to the Resource-Based View (RBV) theory. This study utilizes survey data collected from 235 manufacturing practitioners employed by Turkish manufacturing enterprises to explore a model elucidating the relationship between DTs adoption and sustainability performance (SP) through supply chain traceability (SCT), supply chain resilience (SCR), and circular economy practices (CEPs), based on 10R strategies. Through this linkage, this research accentuates that the exclusive integration of CEPs with digital technology solutions is insufficient for industrial enterprises to attain their long-term sustainability goals. It underscores the necessity of ensuring SCT and/or SCR in this context.
