Sustainability to financial realities: A comparative study of renewable energy's impact on financial performance
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 2024) Chlyeh, Dounia; Bayraktar, Erkan; Yılmaz, Mustafa Kemal; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Zaim, Selim; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü
This study examines the impact of renewable energy (RE) performance on companies' financial performance, primarily focusing on RE-related sustainable development goals (SDGs) and environmental factors. We analyze a sample of 2,737 companies across 47 countries from 2009 to 2018 using panel data analysis. Our results suggest that the effect of RE performance can be understood through three phases: policies adopted, targets established, and actions implemented. Interestingly, RE policies negatively impact profitability due to the substantial costs incurred by companies. Moreover, RE-related SDGs are found to affect companies' financial performance adversely. However, environmental factors demonstrate a positive and significant impact on corporate financial performance, which is observed consistently across developed and emerging countries. Furthermore, RE performance targets and actions have a significant positive impact, specifically in developed countries. This highlights the complex relationship between RE initiatives and financial outcomes, highlighting differential effects across various stages of implementation and geographic contexts.

(Taylor and Francis, 2024) Kahveci, Eyüp; Avunduk, Zehra Binnur; Daim, Tuğrul; Zaim, Selim; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü
We explore the impact of COVID-19 on small- and medium-sizedenterprises (SMEs) and examine how crisis management strate-gies, particularly related to flexibility and digitalization, haveinfluenced their responses during and after the pandemic. Inthis regard, we investigate the relationships between strategicflexibility, digitalization, digital technology adoption, COVID-19 perception, and firm strategy after the pandemic by specifi-cally incorporating the mediating role of the crisis responsestrategy. Based on a survey of 206 Turkish SMEs in manufactur-ing and service industries, our research employs structural equa-tion modeling using Smart PLS. Our findings indicate that crisisresponse strategies play a significant role in shaping the firmstrategy after COVID-19, mediating the impact of strategic flex-ibility, digitalization, digital technology adoption, and COVID-19 perception. The findings highlight the importance of crisisresponse strategies—including optimizing business models, developing marketing channels, investing in technologicalinnovation, diversifying into new business areas, and integrat-ing the supply chain—during the COVID-19 period. These stra-tegies are crucial influencers in shaping the firm strategies ofSMEs beyond the pandemic. In particular, SMEs demonstrateadaptation by reassessing and restructuring their product port-folios, expanding their presence in regional markets, and estab-lishing strategic collaborations to thrive in the evolving businesslandscape.

(Elsevier, 2017) Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Zaim, Selim; Delen, Dursun; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Zaim, Selim; Delen, Dursun; Arda, Özlem Ayaz; Delen, Dursun; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Zaim, Selim; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü
This study examines the organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) of employees by designing and developing an analytic network process (ANP) methodology. The viability of the proposed methodology is demonstrated via the sales representatives of Beko, a brand name controlled by Koç Group. We first develop a conceptual framework based on qualitative research methods – in-depth interviews and focus group sessions. We employ the principles of ANP methodology to examine and discover the inter-relationships among the OCBs. This process results in a descriptive model that encapsulates the findings from both qualitative and analytics methods. Necessity, altruism, departmental, compliance, and independence are the underlying dimensions of OCBs found to be the most influential/important. The key novelty of this study resides in designing and developing a prescriptive analytics (i.e. ANP) methodology to evaluate the OCBs, which is rare in the area of organizational behavior (a managerial field of study that have been dominated by traditional statistical methods), and thus serves as a useful contribution/augmentation to the business/managerial research methods, and also extends the reach/coverage of analytics-based decision support systems research and practice into a new direction.

Unveiling the drivers of global logistics efficiency: Insights from cross-country analysis
(MDPI, 2024) Bayraktar, Erkan; Eryarsoy, Enes; Kosanoglu, Fuat; Acar, Mehmet Fatih; Zaim, Selim; Zaim, Selim; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü
This study presents a novel approach to assess countries’ relative logistics performance differentials and identifies the underlying drivers using a data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach. The findings offer strategic insights and provide nations with valuable guidance in navigating the dynamic landscape of global logistics competitiveness. Recognizing the pivotal role of logistics in fostering economic activity and contributing to sustainability, we utilize the Logistics Performance Index (LPI) within the DEA model to gauge efficiencies at the country level and scrutinize influencing factors. Our findings indicate that international shipment practices in the last decade, as well as tracking and tracing recently, no longer contribute to the competitiveness of the countries, despite their potential for improvement. The overall change in logistics efficiency during the last decade remained relatively marginal, primarily driven by the frontier-shift effect. However, notable disparities among the country performance groups, particularly in adopting technological advancements, are manifested in the frontier-shift effect. Countries with lower logistics performance should prioritize addressing structural challenges related to customs, infrastructure, quality of logistics services, and timeliness. Medium-performance countries, while benefiting from a focus on customs, tracking and tracing, and timeliness in the early 2010s, are advised to align their efforts with high-performance countries by emphasizing managerial aspects in recent times.

(Elsevier, 2019) Beyca, Ömer Faruk; Ervural, Beyzanur Çayır; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Özuyar, Pınar Gökçin; Zaim, Selim; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Zaim, Selim; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü
Commensurate with unprecedented increases in energy demand, awell-constructed forecastingmodel is vital to managing energy policies effectively by providing energy diversity and energy requirements that adapt to the dynamic structure of the country. In this study, we employ three alternative popular machine learning tools for rigorous projection of natural gas consumption in the province of Istanbul, Turkey's largest natural gas-consuming mega-city. These tools include multiple linear regression (MLR), an artificial neural network approach (ANN) and support vector regression (SVR). The results indicate that the SVR is much superior to ANN technique, providing more reliable and accurate results in terms of lower prediction errors for time series forecasting of natural gas consumption. This study could well serve a useful benchmarking study for many emerging countries due to the data structure, consumption frequency, and consumption behavior of consumers in various time-periods.

Energy planning involves a perpetual process of reevaluating alternative energy strategies. Authorities responsible for energy planning and management have to adjust their strategies according to new and improved alternative solutions based on the sustainability criteria. In this study, we propose an integrated hybrid methodology for the analysis of Turkey’s energy sector using Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis, Analytic Network Process (ANP) process, and weighted fuzzy Technique for Order Performance by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) to formulate and holistically analyze the energy strategy alternatives and priorities. The methodology proposed in this study allowed identifying the relevant criteria and sub-criteria using a SWOT analysis. Then, ANP approach, which is one of the popular multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) methods, is employed to determine the weights of each SWOT factors and sub-factors. Finally, fuzzy TOPSIS methodology is conducted to prioritize alternative energy strategies. We discuss the obtained results for the development of long-range alternative energy strategies. The results showed that turning the country into an energy hub and an energy terminal by effectively using the geo-strategic position within the framework of the regional cooperation is the most important priority. On the other hand, using the nuclear energy technologies within the energy supply strategies found to be the least favored priority.

(Springer, 2024) Acar, Mehmet Fatih; Torgalöz, Alev Özer; Eryarsoy, Enes; Zaim, Selim; Ruel, Salomée; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü
This study investigates the impact of intangible resources such as adhocracy culture (ADC), information sharing with suppliers (IS), and supplier trust (ST) on supply chain viability (SCV) under high inflation environment. To do this, a conceptual model is developed to analyze the associations between these suggested variables. Using on a cross-sectional survey, data are collected from 216 supply chain (SC) and production practitioners based in Türkiye who are medium- to senior-level managers. To analyze our theoretical model, we processed our data and model using lavaan package in R. The results show a significant relationship between ADC and SCV. Additionally, both of IS and ST capabilities are found to have a strong mediating effect on the ADC and SCV relationship. The results of this study will provide insight for managers and researchers to prevent the negative effects of SC disruptions due to the high inflation or other type of stress tests. Extant research has investigated the SCV with different crises like COVID-19 pandemic however, the study is the first research that examines SCV under high inflation stress test. Moreover, ADC, IS and ST have not widely appeared in SCV literature. In this regard, this research also contributes to the ongoing efforts of investigating the antecedents of SCV.
