Iustınus Martyr’in Birinci Apologıa’sı kapsamında pagan düşünce

Abstract

Bu tez, 2’nci yüzyılın önde gelen kilise babalarından Iustinus Martyr’in (y.100-y.165) pagan inanç sistemini ele alış biçimini ve bu inanç sistemine karşı argümanlarını, onun Birinci Apologia isimli eseri özelinde incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Teorik çerçeve kapsamında çalışma üç ana bölüm altında sınıflandırılmıştır. Birinci bölüm, “Bir Kilise Babası olarak Iustinus Martyr” ismini taşımakta olup, burada, Iustinus Martyr’in yaşamına dair bilgi verilmiş ve onun Hıristiyanlığı benimseme süreci görece detaylandırılmıştır. İkinci bölüm, “Apologia’nın Tanımı ve Önemi” başlığını taşımakta olup “apologia” ve “apolojist” gibi kavramları tanımlama ve bunların literatürdeki kullanımlarını okura aktarma amacı ve ayrıca apologia türünün önemini vurgulama hedefi öncelenmektedir. Üçüncü ana kısım, “Iustinus Martyr’in Birinci Apologia Eserinde Paganizmi Ele Alışı ve Ona Yönelik Eleştirileri” başlığını taşımaktadır. Bu kısım, başlıktan da anlaşılacağı üzere tezin odak noktasını oluşturmaktadır. Bu itibarla burada, Iustinus’un Birinci Apologia’sında paganizmin ele alınış biçimi esas iskeleti oluşturmak kaydıyla beş ayrı kısım yer almaktadır. İlk kısımda, Iustinus Martyr’in, pagan inanç sistemindeki tanrı anlayışı hakkındaki eleştirileri ele alınacaktır; ayrıca, onun, pagan tanrıları ile iblisleri mukayese eden satırları ve pagan halkın bu tanrılara yönelik ibadetlerine ilişkin analizleri incelenecektir. İkinci kısımda, Iustinus Martyr’in başta Pagan filozof Plat?n olmak üzere filozofları, felsefeyi ve logos kavramını ele alışı üzerine durulacaktır. Logos kavramı, yazarın İsa Mesih’i “logos’un vücuda gelmiş hâli” olarak tanımlamasından dolayı ayrıca önemlidir. Üçüncü kısımda, Iustinus Martyr’in, Hristiyanların, Roma İmparatorluğu’nun siyasi otoritesine başkaldırma gibi bir niyete sahip olmadıklarına dair görüşleri yer bulacaktır. Dördüncü kısımda, Iustinus Martyr’in Paganların adalet anlayışından ve konu Hristiyanlık olunca Paganların sergilediğini öne sürdüğü tutumlardan yakınması yer alacaktır. Beşinci ve son kısımda ise Iustinus Martyr’in, Iuppiter’in oğulları, Mercurius, Perseus ve Asklepios gibi pagan karakterler üzerinden Hristiyanlık ile Paganizm arasındaki etkileşime dikkat çeken satırları analiz edilecektir. Sonuç itibariyle, tez çalışmamız, Roma Dünyası’nda 2’nci yüzyılda Paganizm’in ne olduğuna ya da nasıl anlaşıldığına dair Hristiyan bakış açısını yansıtan söz konusu esere yönelik bir incelemedir.

This thesis aims to examine the way Iustinus Martyr (c.100-c.165), one of the leading church fathers of the 2nd century, approached the pagan belief system and his arguments against this belief system, in his work titled First Apologia. Within the theoretical framework, the study is classified under three main sections. The first chapter is titled “Justinus Martyr as a Church Father”, where information about the life of Justinus Martyr is given and his conversion to Christianity is relatively detailed. The second chapter is titled "Definition and Importance of Apologia" and aims to define concepts such as "apologia" and "apologist" and to convey their use in the literature to the reader, as well as to emphasize the importance of the type of apologia. The third main part is titled "Iustinus Martyr's Treatment of Paganism in His First Apologia and His Criticisms". As the title suggests, this part is the focus of the thesis. In this respect, there are five separate parts here, provided that the way paganism is handled in the First Apologia of Iustinus forms the main point. In the first part, Iustinus Martyr's criticisms about the understanding of god in the pagan belief system will be discussed; In addition, his lines comparing pagan gods and demons and his analysis of the pagan people's worship of these gods will be examined. In the second part, Iustinus Martyr's handling of philosophers, philosophy and the concept of logos, especially the Pagan philosopher Platon, will be emphasized. The concept of logos is also important because the author describes Jesus Christ as "the incarnation of logos". In the third part, Iustinus Martyr's views that Christians did not have any intention of rebelling against the political authority of the Roman Empire will take place. In the fourth part, Iustinus Martyr's complaint about the Pagans' understanding of justice and the attitudes he claims to be exhibited by the Pagans when it comes to Christianity will take place. In the fifth and last part, the lines of Iustinus Martyr that draw attention to the interaction between Christianity and Paganism through pagan characters such as the sons of Iuppiter, Mercurius, Perseus and Asklepios will be analyzed. As a result, our thesis is an examination of the work in question, which reflects the Christian perspective on what Paganism was or how it was understood in the Roman World in the 2nd century.
