The role of Instagram in influencing the publishing, sharing, and posting related to the Sheikh Jarrah 2021 events

Abstract

Depending on many users' criticism of social media platforms for the censoring of the information on Sheikh Jarrah events, the study aims to find out and expose how Instagram's terms and conditions of sharing posts and feed affect the influencing, publishing and posting related to Sheikh Jarrah 2021 events that erupted on May 10, 2021 and to find out whether Instagram, has restricted and erased information related to the event. The study followed the quantitative and qualitative research approaches by designing a questionnaire of (304) persons who were distributed an online questionnaire. Moreover, intensive interviews were conducted with some of the experts and influencers to gain more in-depth understanding of the problem of the research. The study found out that Instagram played a role in controlling the publishing by many forms such as deleted posts, limited story reach, deleted comments, and even removed or deleted Instagram pages and accounts that were pro-Palestinian and related to the events of Sheikh Jarrah, despite the official denials made by spokespeople for the company of Instagram. It was assumed that the sample study for this research revealed that the news about the events in Sheikh Jarrah gathered from the Instagram profiles of influencers like Bella Hadid, Muna Al-Kurd, and others were more trustworthy and dependable than other news sources. It was observed that Instagram influencer profiles and posts give users greater opportunities to stay up to speed on current events or perhaps learn about them for the first time.
