Byzantine theorists and generals of the period up to the 10th and 11th centuries had well-established theoretical and practical ideas about warfare-from strategies and battle tactics to army formations, armament, logistical organisation, and tricks to deceive the enemy. These were detailed in a distinct literary genre of military handbooks that contained constitutions and treatises of a military nature, and whose immense value lies largely in their quality as repositories of (military) knowledge, and in their advisory and didactic use for up-and-coming army officers and civil servants. The aim of this chapter is to bring to the forefront the common ideas and considerations of the authors of these handbooks on key issues of strategy, and to show the chronological transmission of key strategic precepts in the history of the Byzantine empire. Furthermore, the chapter showcases the Byzantine ability to scrutinise and evaluate the tactics and fighting abilities of their enemies, and their eagerness to adapt their tactics to the requirements of each operational theatre, while it also refers to the delicate equilibrium between the Byzantines' appetite for war, and their willingness to use "other means," and how this formed part of the classical Roman military theoretical tradition picked up by their eastern Roman successors.
