Yayın 10th year of Syrian civil war: Schooling and psychosocial issues of syrian children in Turkey(Academic Journals, 2021) Aktaş, Abdullah; Bulut, Sefa; Bulut, Sefa; Eğitim Bilimleri Fakültesi, Rehberlik ve Psikolojik Danışmanlık BölümüVarious studies claim that war has devastating effects on the psychological well-being of its victims. Such conflicts destroy not only cities and their infrastructure but also the established systems; such as the schooling system. In the wake of such destruction, millions of children are displaced and find themselves apart from their homes and their schools. Their attempts at accommodating themselves with the host communities are not easy, given the immense trauma they experienced. The resulting psychological and social problems make it more difficult for these children to fit in. The disruption to their education is yet another factor that affects their attempts at fitting in. The current paper aims to present a literature review focusing on the issues faced by child victims of war and conflicts. From their most apparent needs to the more subtle ones, this paper aims to evaluate the overall status of Syrian children in Turkey. This paper investigates the abovementioned issues by rewieving the previous literature with the help of the both quantitative and qualitative work from international NGOs and researchers. Although a large number of studies on the topic have been conducted, the majority of them focused on the current and short-term psychosocial effects that children face. However, there is much work to be done to prevent the long-term effects of the same.Yayın 11th Global Waqf Conference “New Generation Waqfship”: 7-9 September 2023, Istanbul(Ibn Haldun University, 2023) Çınar, Ömer; Yılmaz, Osman; Tuna, Mustafa Oğuz; Uysal, Afra; Solmaz Bilici, Meryem; Kaan, Muhammet Talha; Hukuk Fakültesi, Hukuk BölümüWaqf is an old but evergreen instrument to be used in capitalizing funds for land development projects. Nowadays, waqf has been used to finance many types of development projects world widely. In Malaysia, there are many iconic waqf buildings that have been built and completed on waqf land using Islamic sharia-compliant financing...Yayın 19th and 20th-century Islamic scholars’ approaches to miracles(İbn Haldun Üniversitesi, 2024) Sarıkaya, Abdüssamet; Sarıkaya, Abdüssamet; İslami İlimler Fakültesi, Temel İslam Bilimleri BölümüThe Islamic modernists, led by Abduh, Afghani, Rashid Reza, and Sayyid Ahmad Khan, attempted to establish a direct parallel between the values produced by the Enlightenment and Islamic beliefs as an expression of a sense of oppression against the West. Their modernist stance profoundly affected Qurʾānic interpretation in the new age, and serious ruptures were experienced in issues such as “the dominance of revelation over reason”, “the use of early narrations as a source of interpretation”, and “preserving the issues related to the realm unseen”, which have been emphasized by the classical Islamic scholarly tradition. The miraculous parables have also had their share of these efforts at change. In a manner very similar to the conception of “natural religion” that flourished with the Enlightenment, the possibility of miracles has come up for discussion. In this context, they followed modern scientific developments and needed to explain the miracles within this framework.Yayın A comparative assessment of frequentist forecasting models: Evidence from the S&P 500 pharmaceuticals index(Istanbul University, 2023) Muneza, Christian; Khan, Asad ul Islam; Badshah, Waqar; Khan, Asad ul Islam; İnsan ve Toplum Bilimleri Fakültesi, İktisat BölümüThis paper compares three forecasting methods, the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (GARCH), and neural network autoregression (NNAR) methods, using the S&P 500 Pharmaceuticals Index. The objective is to identify the most accurate model based on the mean average forecasting error (MAFE). The results consistently show the NNAR model to outperform ARIMA and GARCH and to exhibit a significantly lower MAFE. The existing literature presents conflicting findings on forecasting model accuracy for stock indexes. While studies have explored various models, no universally applicable model exists. Therefore, a comparative analysis is crucial. The methodology includes data collection and cleaning, exploratory analysis, and model building. The daily closing prices of pharmaceutical stocks from the S&P 500 serve as the dataset. The exploratory analysis reveals an upward trend and increasing heteroscedasticity in the pharmaceuticals index, with the unit root tests confirming non-stationarity. To address this, the dataset has been transformed into stationary returns using logarithmic and differencing techniques. Model building involves splitting the dataset into training and test sets. The training set determines the best-fit models for each method. The models are then compared using MAFE on the test set, with the model possessing the lowest MAFE being considered the best. The findings provide insights into model accuracy for pharmaceutical industry indexes, aiding investor predictions, with the comparative analysis emphasizing tailored forecasting models for specific indexes and datasets.Yayın A comparison between the muškênum and the mukâtab regarding their legal liabilities and responsibilities(On İki Levha Yayıncılık, 2024) Uysal, Afra; Osmanağaoğlu, Cihan; Gedikli, Fethi; Hukuk Fakültesi, Hukuk BölümüBu kitap, Uluslararası XXVI. When he con- verted he adopted the name Abd al-Ahad (Servant of the One). According to a short biography that appeared in the Islamic Reviev in 1929, David Benjamin was bom in 1867 in Urmia, Iran. He received his early educa- tion in his home town. Between 1886 and 1889, he served among the teaching staff of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s mission to the Assyrian (Nestorian) Christians in Urmia. The school considers abortion to be a sin and a crime after the clear manifestation of the creation of the human being in the womb. While some Ḥanafī jurists take clear manifestation of creation to refer to ensoulment (120 days postconception based on the interpretation of a ḥadīth), others take it to refer to the physical formation of the fetus. Prior to the manifestation of creation, there is considerable legal diversity within the school concerning the ethico-legal status of induced abortion. This chapter examines the ethico-legal perspectives on induced abortion within the Ḥanafī School of Islamic law. The presentation is purely academic and hence does not constitute a fatwā. Since the Ḥanafī School is the largest school of Islamic law, and given the inherent plurality of the Sunnī ethico-legal tradition, providing a comprehensive reading of all of the different opinions presented by Ḥanafī jurists, both classical and modern, is not feasible. This piece instead outlines the dominant positions of leading authorities within the school and highlights several areas of contestation that remain part of the continuing Ḥanafī discourse on the ethical and legal aspects of abortion. As there are many ethico-legal dimensions of induced abortion and it is not possible to analyze all of these in detail within the scope of the current work, the chapter focuses on the following interrelated questions: What is the legal status leading Ḥanafī authorities assign to induced abortion? How does this status relate to timing of abortion? What are the criteria for determining when a fetus becomes a human being? Does the mother need the father’s permission for abortion? Does abortion have penal consequences? Is abortion in case of pregnancy from rape permissible? The discussion of these questions will be preceded by a brief description of the Ḥanafī School and followed by a short evaluation of the arguments presented.Yayın Abrahamic reflections on randomness and providence(Palgrave Macmillan, 2022) Clark, Kelly James; Koperski, Jeffrey; İnsan ve Toplum Bilimleri Fakültesi, Felsefe BölümüThis open access book addresses the question of how God can providentially govern apparently ungovernable randomness. Medieval theologians confidently held that God is provident, that is, God is the ultimate cause of or is responsible for everything that happens. However, scientific advances since the 19th century pose serious challenges to traditional views of providence. From Darwinian evolution to quantum mechanics, randomness has become an essential part of the scientific worldview. An interdisciplinary team of Muslim, Christian and Jewish scholars—biologists, physicists, philosophers and theologians—addresses questions of randomness and providence.Yayın Absorptive capacity and organizational performance in an emerging market context: Evidence from the banking industry in Turkey(Elsevier, 2022) Bouguerra, Abderaouf; Mellahi, Kamel; Glaister, Keith; Sadeghi, Arash; Temouri, Yama; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüAdopting the knowledge-based view (KBV), this study investigates how and when firms in emerging economies are able to generate greater performance from the absorptive capacity (AC). We distinguish between two core components of AC - potential absorptive capacity (PAC) and realized absorptive capacity (RAC) - and examine their independent as well as the joint effect on organizational performance. Then, we examine the moderating effects of environmental dynamism and branch network- as key boundary conditions. With data from 205 bank managers in Turkey, we show that the complementary effect of PAC and RAC on organizational performance is greater than the separate effect of each component. Moreover, the findings indicate that the combined effect becomes stronger when firms are part of an extensive branch network and function in a low level of environmental dynamism. We extend the KBV by demonstrating that innovation and knowledge resource development in emerging markets requires a collective effort and complementary learning processes to yield high results. Finally, we scrutinize the conditions under which firms in emerging markets can complement their learning processes efficiently to achieve greater performance.Yayın Adamiyyah (humanity) and ‘ismah (inviolability): Humanity as the ground for universal human rights in Islamic law(Atlantic Council, 2018) Şentürk, Recep; Şentürk, Recep; İnsan ve Toplum Bilimleri Fakültesi, Sosyoloji BölümüDr. Recep Şentürk is the president of Ibn Khaldun University (IHU) in Istanbul, Turkey. He has researched human rights as a visiting scholar in the Faculty of Law at Emory University, Atlanta (2002-2003). He continued his research on human rights as a guest of the British Academy in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law at Oxford Brookes University, and he has lectured on the same topic in various universities in the United Kingdom. He has written extensively on the concept of pluralism and Islam and on Islam and human rights. In this brief interview, he discusses human rights through the prism of “humanity.” 1. How would you describe the engagement between the Islamic tradition and the human rights discourse? A legal maxim in Islamic law states, “the right to inviolability (Ismah) is due for humanity (adamiyyah).” This right to inviolability includes inviolability of life, property, religion, mind (freedom of expression), family, and honor. All Hanafi (a rite of Islamic jurisprudence)124 jurists uphold this perspective, as do “universalist” jurists in other rites of Islamic jurisprudence. Thus, according to this perspective, simply being human is sufficient to possess human rights regardless of innate, inherited, and gained attributes such as sex, religion, race, and nationality…Yayın Adapting social media strategies: a comparative analysis of Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Emirates before, during, and after the COVID-19 Pandemic(Bussecon International Academy, 2023) Kim, Tatyana; Kuşakcı, Ali Osman; Kuşakcı, Ali OsmanIn recent years, the aviation industry has transformed significantly, driven by the increasing importance of digital technologies and social media for communication and marketing. The COVID- 19 pandemic accelerated this transformation, posing unprecedented challenges to airlines. The present study investigates how Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Emirates adapted their social media strategies before, during, and after the pandemic. The research has a threefold focus: (i) assessing pre- pandemic social media strategies, (ii) examining strategy evolution during the pandemic, and (iii) comparing the effectiveness of these strategies before and after COVID-19. By exploring how these airlines leveraged social media to navigate pandemic-related disruptions and maintain vital connections with passengers, this study provides valuable insights. These findings hold significant implications for aviation stakeholders, marketing professionals, and researchers, shedding light on the evolving role of social media in crisis communication and marketing. The study uncovered interesting changes in how airlines use Twitter. After the pandemic, they started using more emojis, and their messages shifted from promoting services to expressing hope during the pandemic and back to promotions afterward. They played with visuals and hashtags. Pricing-wise, they offered discounts for students, different ticket options, and bundled services. In promotions, they focused on being environmentally and socially responsible, user convenience, and specific events. They mainly shared updates on flights, achievements, and travel advice. To engage people, they used quizzes, replied directly to customers, and targeted specific groups. For marketing managers, the study suggests being more customer-focused, emphasizing environmental and social responsibility, offering diverse pricing, celebrating milestones, and creating engaging content. Overall, the findings provide practical insights for adjusting marketing strategies in the ever-changing world of airlines, especially considering the challenges brought by COVID-19.Yayın Adjustment challenges and coping strategies of Arab female international university students(Frontiers, 2023) Nazir, Thseen; Özçiçek, Ayşe; Nazir, Thseen; Lilla, Nanine; Eğitim Bilimleri Fakültesi, Rehberlik ve Psikolojik Danışmanlık BölümüOver the past decade, Türkiye has experienced an increasing influx of international students, particularly from various Arab countries. The findings of this review attested to the fact that the prevalence of adolescents smoking is still on the rise especially in Europe and the Arab world. Though the onset of cigarette smoking differed from regions of the world, while most are initiated or start to use tobacco at 13 years, some are initiated into it indirectly as early as 6 years. Social workers, counselors, and health care specialists should be informed of the actual reasons leading to underage or early age smoking, which pinpoints to environmental, peers, and family influences, social media referencing and perceived unjustified benefits of tobacco. The symbolic escalation of smoking among adolescents and kids should be addressed with a well-designed national smoking prevention programs that involve schools and families.Yayın Adolescents alcohol consumption, prevalence and trends(E-Cronicon, 2020) Bulut, Sefa; Usman, Ali Cissey; Gençer, Ali Görkem; Bulut, Sefa; Eğitim Bilimleri Fakültesi, Rehberlik ve Psikolojik Danışmanlık BölümüThere is this false popular belief that alcohol dependence is most common in one’s 40s, In fact, alcohol dependence is most common in young adulthood and has its origins goes back to adolescence. Alcohol use at the end of adolescence can be a detrimental factor in its use in young adulthood. The issue of continuity of alcohol use is also associated with the personality characteristics of the individuals, their individual characteristics and the environmental factors affecting them. It will be useful to identify and investigate the factors affecting individuals’ high levels of alcohol use. Therefore, continuity of alcohol use lays the foundation of prevention programs for alcohol use in adolescence. Reducing alcohol use will also lead to secondary gains such as the prevention of accidents, injuries, and criminal behavior.Yayın Advertisement perception and generations: Comparison between x, y, and z generations(Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli Üniversitesi, 2022) Karanfiloğlu, Mehmet; Sağlam, Murat; Topsümer, Füsun; Karanfiloğlu, Mehmet; İletişim Fakültesi, Yeni Medya ve İletişim FakültesiThe advertising industry and generations are in continual interaction. From past to present, advertisements have been organized for ages. The perceptions and ads have changed on the axis of technological developments. By advertising throughout the traditional media, the messages flow accordingly one-way communication model. However, today’s new media opportunities, such as social media, originate a model based on bidirectional communication and more interaction. Combining the changing perception of people in daily life practice, consumption habits, and lifestyles with technology led to the formation of a diverse audience. It is defined as generation Z. Generation Z is a generation that grew up in a period when technological developments were more diversified than the previous two generations (X, Y) and consequently had a more technological aptitude. However, the X generation, who lived in the analog era, and the Y generation, who experienced both analog and digital periods, have been attempting to adapt to the new era, non-isolated from technological developments. Therefore, three generations have been analyzed in this context by conducting qualitative research, and advertising and intergenerational perception have been comprehended. Those generations demand adaption to this new-tech period. Obtaining data were subjected to content analysis, and three themes have been achieved: Concerns about current circumstances, the inconvenience of ads, and advertising and public relations: digitalization of the profession.Yayın After the disaster(Lannoo, 2023) Bulut, Sefa; Bulut, Sefa; Eğitim Bilimleri Fakültesi, Rehberlik ve Psikolojik Danışmanlık BölümüTurkey woke up on February 6, 2023, to a catastrophic earthquake in Kahramanmaraş that caused massive damages and casualties in eleven cities, and Syria. At present, 4.1 million people have been displaced as a consequence ofthe earthquakes, with 1.5 million ofthem currently homeless…Yayın Aggression in cyberspace and self-defence(Adalet Yayınevi, 2023) Nasrat, Qaisar; Nasrat, Qaisar; Batır, Kerem; Atıcı Kabalak, Cansu; Yıldız, Elif Çağla; Hukuk Fakültesi, Hukuk BölümüCyber attack is a new phenomenon that can change the classical warfare techniques carried out by state and non-state actors. The unique nature of this extremely destructive threat and attacks through cyberspace have the power to damage, kill and physically destroy. Traditional definitions of the use of force have therefore changed. The real question is whether a cyber attack is the use of force equal to an armed attack in terms of international law, or is it basically a prohibition of interference in the internal affairs of countries. In other words, based on Article 2(4) of the United Nations Convention, an answer is sought to the question of whether cyber attack can be considered as the use of armed force. On the other hand, in the case of a large-scale cyber-attack that causes human casualties or property damage or to basic infrastructure comparable to an armed attack with only conventional weapons, does the victim state have the right to defend itself against the cyber-attack? It also gives the armed forces the right to respond with conventional weapons. This study details the question of when a cyberattack constitutes an armed attack according to Article 51 of the UN Charter and allows a state to take kinetic measures alongside active cyber defense measures. Then, the rules prohibiting the use of force in international law will be discussed and whether there is a right of self-defense against cyber attacks will be examined within the framework of current international law, and suggestions will be made regarding cyber attack and kinetic defense policy options for states.Yayın The aging European body in the mediterranean in contemporary narratives(2017) Haliloğlu, Nagihan; Haliloğlu, Nagihan; İnsan ve Toplum Bilimleri Fakültesi, Karşılaştırmalı Edebiyat BölümüThis paper explores representations of the aging, predominantly male European body in the Mediterranean in European film and literature. The earliest narrative I consider is that of Michel Houellebecq’s 2005 novel The Possibility of an Island: it is Houellebecq’s novels that made me aware of this strand of anxiety and melancholy in contemporary European narratives. Houellebecq has been recognized as a magi, a visionary, a writer who has his hand on the pulse of Europe and he is an equally illuminating figure when it comes to exploring how aging is worked through in contemporary narratives. This paper tries to narrow down this preoccupation with aging and death - which can be arguably said to be the Prime Mover in all artistic engagement- by focusing on how the Mediterranean figures in these tales of degeneration, and the kinds of regeneration it points to, such as pregnancy and cloning. I try to determine how northern Europeans try to utilize the Mediterranean weather, scenery, cuisine and bodies to recuperate a sense of youth. So using the concerns raised by Houellebecq in Possibility of an Island as an entry point, I will consider how the British films Unrelated (2007, dir. Joanna Hogg) and Trip to Italy (2014, dir. Michael Winterbottom) speak to these concerns.
