Investigation of in-group and out-group dynamics and psychological well-being among immigrant adolescents in Başakşehir/İstanbul

Abstract

Social identity is a fundamental concept for humans, especially those in the age of forming identities. Including the theory of social identity, out-group prejudice and in-group favoritism can be serious problems for those in the years of adolescents who are immigrants. We must understand the processes and coping mechanisms of youngsters due to the importance of social identity and the sensitivity of their age. Issues of identity development might affect mental health and social integration. We aim to investigate the lived experiences of Başakşehir's immigrant teenagers. The emphasis will mainly be on how they improve their psychological health and cultural integration.. We want to know how they manage social exclusion (if there is) and form their social identities...

Çalışmamızda, farklı ülkelerden Türkiye'ye, özellikle de İstanbul’un Başakşehir bölgesine aileleri ile birlikte göç eden ergenlik döneminde gençleri, sosyal deneyimlerini ve bu gençlerin sosyal sağlığını incelemektedir. Türkiye'ye gelen bu genç göçmenler, yeni bir kültüre ve dile uyum sağlama ve yeni arkadaşlar edinme sürecinde çeşitli zorluklarla karşılaşmaktadır. Bu zorluklardan biri, aynı anda hem "grup içi" hem de "grup dışı" aidiyet hissetmelidir. Göçmen çocuklar bir yandan kendilerini rahat ve kabul edilmiş hissettikleri kendi ülkelerinden gelen diğer göçmenlerle yakın bir bağ kurma eğilimindeyken, diğer yandan “grup dışı” olarak nitelendirilen Türk toplumuyla ilişkiler geliştirmeye çalışmaktadırlar. Ancak bu süreçte, zaman zaman dışlanmış hissetme, ayrımcılıkla karşılaşma veya Türk toplumunda arkadaş edinme konusunda zorluk yaşama gibi durumlar, onların psikolojik iyi oluşlarını ve kendilik algılarını olumsuz etkileyebilmektedir...
