| dc.description.abstract | In the present contribution, we discuss Istanbul not as a unique place, although the city certainly was unique in many respects. At the same time however, the Ottoman capital was an example of a special category, namely the center of an early modern empire. As other exemplars, we may name the central cities of the Mughal Empire (Shahjahanabad/Delhi, Agra, for a while Fatehpur Sikri, Lahore), or else the capital of a large and highly organized kingdom such as France… | |
