This article offers an ecofeminist reading of Gillian Flynn's Sharp Objects (2006), a crime novel predominantly examined through feminist criticism and trauma studies, with its ecological dimension remaining hitherto largely unexplored. Situating the novel at the intersection of domestic noir and eco-noir, this study argues that gendered violence and violence against non-human animals are structurally interconnected through shared ideological mechanisms of anthropocentric and patriarchal domination. Rather than claiming that the novel explicitly articulates ecological concerns, the article demonstrates how the same logic that constructs and regulates gender roles simultaneously governs human relationships with animals and nature. Through close readings of key spaces, namely the slaughterhouse, the hunting shed, and the forest, and through analysis of the three central female characters, Adora, Camille, and Amma, the article reveals striking parallels between the murders of young girls and the exploitation of animal bodies. In doing so, it reveals that patriarchy and anthropocentrism operate as internalised structures, wherein the predominance of female perpetrators and the passivity of male figures expose their persistence as a diffuse, structural force rather than signalling their absence. Accordingly, in foregrounding the entanglement of gender, nature, and violence, Sharp Objects emerges as a critical site for interrogating the interconnected dynamics of domination in contemporary culture.
