Inspirations for corporate sustainability from Umar ibn Al-Khattab’s administration
(2018) Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü
Throughout history, humankind had principally pursued basic principles in order to maintain agricultural, fiscal and social sustainability. To put it all in simple terms, these practices were centuries-long traditions, not sustainability efforts. By the time homo economicus appeared with an inevitable intention of profit-maximization, rules of the game have drastically changed. The world was riding to final destination at full speed and we launched the concept of sustainability as if it was totally brand-new approach. More precisely, even though sustainability as a modern phenomenon has its roots in 1970s, there exist writings and implications from history directly or indirectly addressing managerial sustainability. Among them, administrative implications of Umar ibn Al-Khattab who is the second Rightly Guided Caliph after Prophet Muhammad deserve a particular interest. He was accepted as the great-grandfather of Islamic administration, as he established the initial forms of divan, public treasury, court, land revenue department, police department, intelligence service, etc. in Islamic history. Originating from Al-Medina and Mecca in the Arabian Peninsula, in his reign Islam expanded to Iraq, Iran, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, North Africa and Armenia. Literature review revealed that Umar has not been adequately investigated in terms of his managerial efforts. This work firstly attempts to discover the moral and administrative principles on which Umar constructed a sustainable state structure. Besides the inspirations for the corporate sustainability from his practices will be discussed.

Q?bus-n?ma on virtuous leadership: A medieval model for modern business
(Routledge, 2023) Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü
There is no doubt that social life necessitates the emergence of a ruler. Since leadership is such a broad concept, it became one of the most discussed and researched topics in all areas of social sciences. Both myths and legends, and religious texts describing great leaders and writings about concepts and principles of leadership date back to the emergence of early civilizations. Considering that leadership research has its root in classical texts, these historical manuscripts could be utilized to improve our understanding of leadership. Among many others (Bragues, 2008; Cheng, 2010; Flynn, 2008; Jain & Mukherji, 2009; Klein, 1998; Takala, 1998; Williamson, 2008) relating ancient texts to modern business leadership, Newton (1986) has discussed the relevance of The Republic to understand and shape modern corporations. Although the state and business corporation are distinct institutions, obvious similarities exist between them. Plato’s search for justice within state administration might lead to our search for profitable and sustainable business management…

Corporate social responsibility pyramid in Ethiopia: A mixed study on approaches and practices
(Bussecon International Academy, 2023) Bushera, Ibrahim; Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü
This paper examines CSR approaches and practices of local firms in Ethiopia, where the state is still a key player in business life. Moreover, it assesses at which stage Ethiopian CSR is. This mixed-method study includes quantitative analysis through SPSS and qualitative content analysis. A revised CSR practices scale has been conducted on owners/managers and employees of 100 local companies in Ethiopia. Besides, the companies' official websites have been thoroughly reviewed using five variablesto understand their CSR approaches and practices better. The findings reveal that Ethiopian companies practice CSR though it is at the stage of fragmented CSR and the priorities differ from the global trend. In general, most respondent companies have excellent legal practices and CSR practices toward employees and customers. However, philanthropy, social sustainability, and management of CSR are remarkably at a mediocre level. Content analysis shows similarity with the results of quantitative study, to theexclusion of philanthropy. Notably, the hierarchy derived from our research varies also with Visser's CSR model.

Towards sustainable cities: A sustainability assessment study for metropolitan cities in Turkey via a hybridized IT2F-AHP and COPRAS approach
(Elsevier, 2022) Yılmaz, Mustafa Kemal; Kuşakcı, Ali Osman; Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Sowe, Samba; Nantembelele, Fatuma Abdallah; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü
Accelerating trends of urbanization enforce the integration of sustainability principles into urban planning in a local scale to foster prosperity for the next generation of cities. This study incorporates fifty-three indicators on economic, social, environmental, and institutional dimensions to develop a Sustainable Cities Index (SCI) and assess the sustainability performance of thirty metropolitans in Turkey over 2010-2018. Turkish metropolitans constitute an appealing case study due to the rapid urbanization within the same time span. To answer how new metropolitans have been doing and whether they perform better than formerly declared metropolitans in Turkey, we propose a novel methodology with three stages that hybridizes Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (IT2F-AHP) and Complex Proportional Assessment of Alternatives (COPRAS). The former captures a high degree of uncertainty due to the subjective weight assignment by the experts, while the latter calculates aggregate scores for 30 cities. Finally, we conduct posthoc analyses to examine the significance of the urbani-zation policies in Turkey on the SCI scores. Thus, the study provides valuable insights into urbanization practices and encourages local administrations to spend more effort balancing the benefits and costs of public policies on sustainability.

A historical approach to sustainability in management
(Business and Organization Ethics Network (BON), 2018) Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü
Even though sustainability as a modern phenomenon has its roots in 1970s, there exist historical texts directly or indirectly addressing managerial sustainability. Among these texts, books of advice deserve a particular interest because of their relevance to the field of management. Kutadgu Bilig is an advice text written by Yusuf Khass Hajib of Balasagun in 1070 and presented to the reigning prince of Kashghar. It has been accepted as “the oldest monument of Islamic Turkish literature”. According to Yusuf the key to a sustainable management is justice: “And if you desire everlasting kingdom, then do justice and remove injustice from the people”.This study aims to show the relevance of justice to discussions around the concept of sustainable development, specifically sustainability in management. Our work initially analyzes the concept of justice from Western and Islamic perspectives, and secondly reviews discourses of Yusuf in the matter of justice. Lastly, it is attempted to derive concrete implications for a sustainable management from Yusuf's approach to justice.

Civilization is nothing more than an expression of the accumulation created by the human species belong to a nation. It is not in the will of the people to determine which nationality they will be, but what they practice in the cultural geography of the relevant nationality is at their own will. An up-to-date overview of the motivation-performance relationship: A study on the Bosnian banking sector
(De Gruyter, 2022) Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Dede, Fahri; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü
This study aimed to examine the effect of motivation on work performance. A quantitative research was conducted with the participation of 188 employees working at Ziraat Bank of Bosnia-Herzegovina through a questionnaire consisting of demographic information form, performance, and motivation scales. The study concluded that gender, age, and duration of service in the current institution did not significantly affect performance and motivation. However, education level, marital status, income level, and total work experience made a significant difference in task performance, motivation, intrinsic motivation, and extrinsic motivation, respectively. Moreover, while a moderately positive relationship was found between task performance and intrinsic motivation, contextual performance was determined to be associated with intrinsic and extrinsic motivation moderately and weakly, respectively. On the other hand, work performance had a moderate positive relationship with job motivation. According to the result of regression analysis, job performance is affected positively by intrinsic and negatively by extrinsic motivation.
