Yayın Corporate social responsibility pyramid in Ethiopia: A mixed study on approaches and practices(Bussecon International Academy, 2023) Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Bushera, Ibrahim; Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüThis paper examines CSR approaches and practices of local firms in Ethiopia, where the state is still a key player in business life. Moreover, it assesses at which stage Ethiopian CSR is. This mixed-method study includes quantitative analysis through SPSS and qualitative content analysis. A revised CSR practices scale has been conducted on owners/managers and employees of 100 local companies in Ethiopia. Besides, the companies' official websites have been thoroughly reviewed using five variablesto understand their CSR approaches and practices better. The findings reveal that Ethiopian companies practice CSR though it is at the stage of fragmented CSR and the priorities differ from the global trend. In general, most respondent companies have excellent legal practices and CSR practices toward employees and customers. However, philanthropy, social sustainability, and management of CSR are remarkably at a mediocre level. Content analysis shows similarity with the results of quantitative study, to theexclusion of philanthropy. Notably, the hierarchy derived from our research varies also with Visser's CSR model.Yayın Diversity in the board of directors and the social sustainability pillar of the firm: Evidence from countries with high environmental, social, and governance scores(Common Ground Research Networks, 2022) Amiri, Misagh Haji; Kifo, Nour; Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüThis study aims to empirically test the relationship between board demographic diversity and firms' social sustainability in countries with high Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) scores. The board demographic diversity was measured based on two dimensions: gender and cultural dimensions. Social sustainability was studied through four dimensions: workforce, human rights, community, and product responsibility. The panel data was attained through Thomson Reuters Eikon Database for 1491 firms from ten countries from 2014-2018. The empirical model was tested by two dynamic panel data methods: Generalized Least Squares (GLS) and Ordinary Least Squares (OLS). Findings suggest that gender diversity has a positive impact on all four dimensions of social sustainability. There is also a positive and significant relationship between cultural diversity and three dimensions of social sustainability: workforce, community, and product responsibility. However, cultural diversity has shown an insignificant and negative relationship with the human rights dimension.Yayın Qābus-nāma on virtuous leadership: A medieval model for modern business(Routledge, 2023) Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüThere is no doubt that social life necessitates the emergence of a ruler. Since leadership is such a broad concept, it became one of the most discussed and researched topics in all areas of social sciences. Both myths and legends, and religious texts describing great leaders and writings about concepts and principles of leadership date back to the emergence of early civilizations. Considering that leadership research has its root in classical texts, these historical manuscripts could be utilized to improve our understanding of leadership. Among many others (Bragues, 2008; Cheng, 2010; Flynn, 2008; Jain & Mukherji, 2009; Klein, 1998; Takala, 1998; Williamson, 2008) relating ancient texts to modern business leadership, Newton (1986) has discussed the relevance of The Republic to understand and shape modern corporations. Although the state and business corporation are distinct institutions, obvious similarities exist between them. Plato’s search for justice within state administration might lead to our search for profitable and sustainable business management…Yayın An eleventh century handbook for managers: Qabus-Nama and responsible management(İbn Haldun Üniversitesi, 2019) Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüThis work attempts to reveal the eleventh century- pillars of responsible management introduced by Qābus-nāma. Initially, a qualitative content analysis of the book manifests sustainable, responsible and ethical principles on leadership, human resource management and communication. Secondly, derived principles will be re-structured in order to develop a comprehensive responsible management framework. While contemporary research largely overlooks the managerial experience gained by previous generations, pre-capitalist ages with a very different set of values than today’s could provide us with inestimable implementation alternatives. Findings enhance our understanding of responsible management and thus provides rich opportunities for future research.Yayın Inspirations for corporate sustainability from Umar ibn Al-Khattab’s administration(2018) Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüThroughout history, humankind had principally pursued basic principles in order to maintain agricultural, fiscal and social sustainability. To put it all in simple terms, these practices were centuries-long traditions, not sustainability efforts. By the time homo economicus appeared with an inevitable intention of profit-maximization, rules of the game have drastically changed. The world was riding to final destination at full speed and we launched the concept of sustainability as if it was totally brand-new approach. More precisely, even though sustainability as a modern phenomenon has its roots in 1970s, there exist writings and implications from history directly or indirectly addressing managerial sustainability. Among them, administrative implications of Umar ibn Al-Khattab who is the second Rightly Guided Caliph after Prophet Muhammad deserve a particular interest. He was accepted as the great-grandfather of Islamic administration, as he established the initial forms of divan, public treasury, court, land revenue department, police department, intelligence service, etc. in Islamic history. Originating from Al-Medina and Mecca in the Arabian Peninsula, in his reign Islam expanded to Iraq, Iran, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, North Africa and Armenia. Literature review revealed that Umar has not been adequately investigated in terms of his managerial efforts. This work firstly attempts to discover the moral and administrative principles on which Umar constructed a sustainable state structure. Besides the inspirations for the corporate sustainability from his practices will be discussed.Yayın A value-based leadership model grounded in history(Inderscience Publishers, 2021) Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Busatlic, Senad; Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüValue-based leadership as an umbrella term including authentic, ethical, spiritual leadership, etc. indicates leading by remaining faithful to beliefs and values. This study aims to reveal the relevance of Islamic administration tradition to modern value-based leadership studies. In line with this purpose, Kutadgu Bilig, the oldest monument of the Islamic Turkish literature, was qualitatively inquired. The research design was grounded theory and data was analysed by content analysis using MaxQDA software. Kutadgu Bilig describes an outstanding leader with 23 attributes classified under six categories. While the model combines traits, behaviours, and values, that third one is an indispensable condition of efficiency. Looking across centuries, this comparative analysis reveals that the model grounded in Kutadgu Bilig bears the stamp of ethical and servant leadership. However, it places a premium on the virtuousness of the ruler at the individual level and on the attributes of justice and benevolence at the administrative level.Yayın Ibn Haldun’s approach to sustainability: a function of spirituality and virtuousness(İbn Haldun Üniversitesi, 2019) Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüAccording to Ibn Haldun, royal authority is built up on group feeling (asabiyyah). Obtaining a powerful authority and being spread on a large geographical area require religious coloring. One of the main characteristics of people who have gained control over many lands is their eager desire for virtuous behavior specifically benevolence. Whenever they start to “commit blameworthy deeds and to practice all sorts of vices”, God deprives them of royal authority. This work firstly aims to develop a sustainability model based on Ibn Haldun’s teaching. Religious coloring refers to the spirituality, which is in fact rediscovered in modern ages and transferred to the workplace. Spirituality stimulates virtuousness at personal and organizational level, which in turn generates managerial sustainability meaning the lifespan of a company. While personal virtuousness refers social ethics, organizational level virtuousness could be considered as Corporate Social Responsibility. Briefly, managerial sustainability could be qualified as a function of spirituality, virtuousness and corporate social responsibility. Secondly, it attempts to evaluate the relevance of Ibn Haldun’s approach to contemporary business organizations. In order to demonstrate the relationship between spirituality, virtuousness, CSR, and sustainability; a statistical analysis among Corporate Knights’ Global 100 companies was conducted. The results of the study show; while workplace spirituality leads to ethical conduct and higher CSR/CS score, the relationship between spirituality or CSR and financial performance is not significant. However, it seems that lifespan of business enterprises is related to their CSR score. Companies that are promoting workplace spirituality, emphasizing ethical conduct and initiating socially responsible actions are living longer.Yayın Assessment of Ibn Haldun’s model for sustainability using structural equation modelling(International Association for Business and Society (IABS), 2020) Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Kuşakcı, Ali Osman; Kuşakcı, Ali Osman; Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüThis work firstly aims to develop a sustainability model based on Ibn Haldun’s teaching of sustainability. Religious coloring refers to the spirituality, which is re-discovered in modern ages and transferred to the workplace. Spirituality stimulates virtuousness at personal and organizational level, which in turn generates managerial sustainability meaning the lifespan of a company. While personal virtuousness refers social ethics, organizational level virtuousness could be considered as Corporate Social Responsibility. Secondly, it attempts to evaluate the relevance of Ibn Haldun’s approach to contemporary business organizations. In order to demonstrate the relationship between spirituality, virtuousness, CSR, and sustainability; data collected from Corporate Knights’ Global 100 companies were analyzed using structural equation modelling. According to the results, while workplace spirituality leads to ethical conduct and higher CSR/CS score, the relationship between spirituality or CSR/CS and financial performance is not significant. However, it seems that higher lifespan of business enterprises is related to their CSR/CS score.Yayın A historical approach to sustainability in management(Business and Organization Ethics Network (BON), 2018) Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüEven though sustainability as a modern phenomenon has its roots in 1970s, there exist historical texts directly or indirectly addressing managerial sustainability. Among these texts, books of advice deserve a particular interest because of their relevance to the field of management. Kutadgu Bilig is an advice text written by Yusuf Khass Hajib of Balasagun in 1070 and presented to the reigning prince of Kashghar. It has been accepted as “the oldest monument of Islamic Turkish literature”. According to Yusuf the key to a sustainable management is justice: “And if you desire everlasting kingdom, then do justice and remove injustice from the people”.This study aims to show the relevance of justice to discussions around the concept of sustainable development, specifically sustainability in management. Our work initially analyzes the concept of justice from Western and Islamic perspectives, and secondly reviews discourses of Yusuf in the matter of justice. Lastly, it is attempted to derive concrete implications for a sustainable management from Yusuf's approach to justice.Yayın A synthesis of classical and modern principles of leadership(Ibn Haldun University Press, 2021) Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Busatlic, Senad; Mulalic, Muhidin; Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüCivilization is nothing more than an expression of the accumulation created by the human species belong to a nation.
