Yayın Diversity in the board of directors and the social sustainability pillar of the firm: Evidence from countries with high environmental, social, and governance scores(Common Ground Research Networks, 2022) Amiri, Misagh Haji; Kifo, Nour; Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüThis study aims to empirically test the relationship between board demographic diversity and firms' social sustainability in countries with high Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) scores. The board demographic diversity was measured based on two dimensions: gender and cultural dimensions. Social sustainability was studied through four dimensions: workforce, human rights, community, and product responsibility. The panel data was attained through Thomson Reuters Eikon Database for 1491 firms from ten countries from 2014-2018. The empirical model was tested by two dynamic panel data methods: Generalized Least Squares (GLS) and Ordinary Least Squares (OLS). Findings suggest that gender diversity has a positive impact on all four dimensions of social sustainability. There is also a positive and significant relationship between cultural diversity and three dimensions of social sustainability: workforce, community, and product responsibility. However, cultural diversity has shown an insignificant and negative relationship with the human rights dimension.Yayın Towards sustainable cities: A sustainability assessment study for metropolitan cities in Turkey via a hybridized IT2F-AHP and COPRAS approach(Elsevier, 2022) Yılmaz, Mustafa Kemal; Kuşakcı, Ali Osman; Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Sowe, Samba; Nantembelele, Fatuma Abdallah; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüAccelerating trends of urbanization enforce the integration of sustainability principles into urban planning in a local scale to foster prosperity for the next generation of cities. This study incorporates fifty-three indicators on economic, social, environmental, and institutional dimensions to develop a Sustainable Cities Index (SCI) and assess the sustainability performance of thirty metropolitans in Turkey over 2010-2018. Turkish metropolitans constitute an appealing case study due to the rapid urbanization within the same time span. To answer how new metropolitans have been doing and whether they perform better than formerly declared metropolitans in Turkey, we propose a novel methodology with three stages that hybridizes Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (IT2F-AHP) and Complex Proportional Assessment of Alternatives (COPRAS). The former captures a high degree of uncertainty due to the subjective weight assignment by the experts, while the latter calculates aggregate scores for 30 cities. Finally, we conduct posthoc analyses to examine the significance of the urbani-zation policies in Turkey on the SCI scores. Thus, the study provides valuable insights into urbanization practices and encourages local administrations to spend more effort balancing the benefits and costs of public policies on sustainability.Yayın An eleventh century handbook for managers: Qabus-Nama and responsible management(İbn Haldun Üniversitesi, 2019) Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüThis work attempts to reveal the eleventh century- pillars of responsible management introduced by Q?bus-n?ma. Initially, a qualitative content analysis of the book manifests sustainable, responsible and ethical principles on leadership, human resource management and communication. Secondly, derived principles will be re-structured in order to develop a comprehensive responsible management framework. While contemporary research largely overlooks the managerial experience gained by previous generations, pre-capitalist ages with a very different set of values than today’s could provide us with inestimable implementation alternatives. Findings enhance our understanding of responsible management and thus provides rich opportunities for future research.Yayın A value-based leadership model grounded in history(Inderscience Publishers, 2021) Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Busatlic, Senad; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüValue-based leadership as an umbrella term including authentic, ethical, spiritual leadership, etc. indicates leading by remaining faithful to beliefs and values. This study aims to reveal the relevance of Islamic administration tradition to modern value-based leadership studies. In line with this purpose, Kutadgu Bilig, the oldest monument of the Islamic Turkish literature, was qualitatively inquired. The research design was grounded theory and data was analysed by content analysis using MaxQDA software. Kutadgu Bilig describes an outstanding leader with 23 attributes classified under six categories. While the model combines traits, behaviours, and values, that third one is an indispensable condition of efficiency. Looking across centuries, this comparative analysis reveals that the model grounded in Kutadgu Bilig bears the stamp of ethical and servant leadership. However, it places a premium on the virtuousness of the ruler at the individual level and on the attributes of justice and benevolence at the administrative level.Yayın Assessment of Ibn Haldun’s model for sustainability using structural equation modelling(International Association for Business and Society (IABS), 2020) Kuşakcı, Ali Osman; Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüThis work firstly aims to develop a sustainability model based on Ibn Haldun’s teaching of sustainability. Religious coloring refers to the spirituality, which is re-discovered in modern ages and transferred to the workplace. Spirituality stimulates virtuousness at personal and organizational level, which in turn generates managerial sustainability meaning the lifespan of a company. While personal virtuousness refers social ethics, organizational level virtuousness could be considered as Corporate Social Responsibility. Secondly, it attempts to evaluate the relevance of Ibn Haldun’s approach to contemporary business organizations. In order to demonstrate the relationship between spirituality, virtuousness, CSR, and sustainability; data collected from Corporate Knights’ Global 100 companies were analyzed using structural equation modelling. According to the results, while workplace spirituality leads to ethical conduct and higher CSR/CS score, the relationship between spirituality or CSR/CS and financial performance is not significant. However, it seems that higher lifespan of business enterprises is related to their CSR/CS score.Yayın Ibn Haldun’s approach to sustainability: a function of spirituality and virtuousness(İbn Haldun Üniversitesi, 2019) Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme BölümüAccording to Ibn Haldun, royal authority is built up on group feeling (asabiyyah). Obtaining a powerful authority and being spread on a large geographical area require religious coloring. One of the main characteristics of people who have gained control over many lands is their eager desire for virtuous behavior specifically benevolence. Whenever they start to “commit blameworthy deeds and to practice all sorts of vices”, God deprives them of royal authority. This work firstly aims to develop a sustainability model based on Ibn Haldun’s teaching. Religious coloring refers to the spirituality, which is in fact rediscovered in modern ages and transferred to the workplace. Spirituality stimulates virtuousness at personal and organizational level, which in turn generates managerial sustainability meaning the lifespan of a company. While personal virtuousness refers social ethics, organizational level virtuousness could be considered as Corporate Social Responsibility. Briefly, managerial sustainability could be qualified as a function of spirituality, virtuousness and corporate social responsibility. Secondly, it attempts to evaluate the relevance of Ibn Haldun’s approach to contemporary business organizations. In order to demonstrate the relationship between spirituality, virtuousness, CSR, and sustainability; a statistical analysis among Corporate Knights’ Global 100 companies was conducted. The results of the study show; while workplace spirituality leads to ethical conduct and higher CSR/CS score, the relationship between spirituality or CSR and financial performance is not significant. However, it seems that lifespan of business enterprises is related to their CSR score. Companies that are promoting workplace spirituality, emphasizing ethical conduct and initiating socially responsible actions are living longer.
