The origins of digital colonialism
(2025) Yılmaz, Özgür
This article explores the historical and structural foundations of digital colonialism by examining how contemporary digital infrastructures, dominated by powerful multinational corporations and nation-states, replicate and extend traditional colonial hierarchies. Drawing on perspectives from political science and communication studies, the study conceptualizes digital colonialism as a multidimensional phenomenon encompassing economic, technological, epistemic, and cultural domination. It argues that digital platforms function as tools of extractive capitalism, enabling the appropriation of data, algorithmic governance, and monopolization of digital infrastructures. The article highlights how this digital hegemony disproportionately affects the Global South, reinforcing dependencies and limiting technological sovereignty. Utilizing the ethnography of written texts as a methodological framework, the study contextualizes digital colonial practices within broader histories of imperialism and capitalist expansion. While mapping the ideological and structural mechanisms of digital colonialism, the article also investigates possible resistance strategies, including digital sovereignty, open-source alternatives, and transnational cooperation. Ultimately, the article advocates for a critical rethinking of global digital governance structures to promote justice, autonomy, and equity in the digital age.

The effects of digitalisation on journalism: Changes and transformations in Turkish sports journalism
(Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli Üniversitesi, 2025) Yılmaz, Özgür
This study explores the transformative impact of digitalisation on sports journalism, with a specific focus on Turkish media. Historically, sports journalism evolved through traditional platforms such as newspapers, radio, and television, each shaping how sports were consumed and perceived. The advent of digital platforms has revolutionized this landscape, offering interactive and audience-centered experiences while challenging conventional norms and ethics. In Türkiye, digital platforms like YouTube and social media have become essential outlets for sports content, integrating real-time updates, fan-driven narratives, and personalized consumption. Text mining and content analysis were employed to examine the practices of prominent Turkish sports journalists and their interactions with audiences. The findings reveal that digitalisation has enhanced accessibility and engagement but also has amplified issues such as sensationalism, misinformation, and a narrow focus on football. The study highlights the hybrid nature of Turkish sports journalism, where traditional practices coexist with digital innovations. While digitalisation presents opportunities for inclusiveness and innovation, it also necessitates addressing persistent ethical and structural challenges. This research contributes to understanding the evolving dynamics of sports journalism in the digital age, emphasizing the need for a balance between technological advancements and professional integrity.

Labour and exploitation processes in Artificial Intelligence: Example of Digital Taylorism in data labelling
(Çağatay SARP, 2025) Bostancı, Meltem; Yılmaz, Özgür
The advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) depends on vast datasets that require extensive human labour for annotation and labelling. Despite being framed as autonomous and intelligent, AI systems rely on precarious digital labour, particularly in the Global South. Data labelling, essential for AI training, is often outsourced or crowdsourced, exposing workers to low wages, job insecurity, and exploitative conditions. This study explores AI, labour, and global inequalities, demonstrating how Digital Taylorism and datafication intensify worker surveillance while reducing human labour to fragmented, repetitive tasks. The rise of digital sweatshops and a digital underclass reflects historical economic dependencies between the Global North and South. Crowdsourcing platforms and outsourced labour markets create a new form of exploitation under the guise of technological progress. This research challenges the prevailing narrative of AI as a purely technological advancement by unveiling its socio-economic dimensions. Findings emphasize the necessity of ethical AI development, transparency in labour practices, and structural reforms to protect workers from exploitation. Without intervention, AI risks deepening global inequalities, concentrating wealth and power while reinforcing systemic disparities in the digital economy. Addressing these issues requires a critical approach that situates AI within broader socio-political and economic structures, ensuring technology serves equitable and just purposes rather than perpetuating historical injustices.
