Özet
Pious foundations also known as waqfs in the Islamic world have been one of the major achievement of Islamic civilization. They have served not only as financial institution but also the way of supplying all sort of social services in the economy. Using data on Istanbul waqfs for the period 16th to 18th century, this paper studies the evolution of Istanbul waqfs, cash or non-cash, over time focusing on the gender and identity composition of waqf founders, and economic and social areas where the waqf resources were intended to be directed.
