Digital media and the religious literacy process: Narratives of Muslim American female youth

In the digital age that we currently live in, mostly everything we are using is associated with technology. With this comes an overwhelming number of research on the negative and positive outcomes of technology in every aspect of our lives. As a result, it is mandatory to evaluate the intersection of social media with different sectors of society. One example is found in comprehending how social media, as a computer-mediated technology, behaves as an educational space for specific members of society- the youth that spend the majority of their time on their phones and Internet. This sociological and anthropological work will not strictly uncover the type of religious knowledge that Muslim American female youth acquire via these social media spaces. It will tie this knowledge into the construction of the Muslim American female identity by shedding light on how these youth engage in worship practices based on their religious understandings. In other words, I argue that we should study social media just like any institution that shapes a group's identity through their religious perceptions.
