From motives to optimal functioning: The beneficial role of self-concordance in crafting a good life

Hedonic, eudaimonic, and extrinsic motives in daily activities affect well-being outcomes. Hedonic motives refer to pleasure and comfort pursuit. Eudaimonic motives include pursuing excellence, authenticity, growth, meaning, and value-congruent activity. Extrinsic motives encompass the pursuit of fame, power, status, material wealth, and popularity. Previous research has laid emphasis on the connections of well-being motives and outcomes. However, these studies do not largely focus on personal goal selection and pursuit. This study adopts the Self-Concordance Model (SCM), and investigates the mediating role of goal self-concordance between well-being motives and outcomes including positive affect, negative affect, meaning in life, and life satisfaction. A total of 823 participants (Age mean = 23,41, SD = 6,94) took part in the study. The results showed that eudaimonic and extrinsic motives had associations with most of the well-being outcomes while hedonic motivation interestingly demonstrated no associations with them. Furthermore, goal self-concordance substantially mediated the positive effects of eudaimonic motivation and the negative effects of extrinsic motivation on well-being outcomes. Implications of well-being motives and outcomes in the context of personal goals are discussed.

Adaptation of the hedonic and eudaimonic motives for activities-revised (HEMA-R) scale among Russian-speaking respondents

Individual motives significantly influence the pursuit of well-being and its outcomes. Hedonic and Eudaimonic Motives for Activities-Revised (HEMA-R) Scale measures eudaimonic, hedonic, hedonic pleasure, and hedonic comfort motives. Hedonic motives include the pursuit of pleasure, enjoyment, fun, relaxation, and comfort. Hedonic pleasure motives refer to the pursuit of enjoyment and fun. Hedonic comfort motives relate to the pursuit of relaxation and comfort-seeking. Eudaimonic motives consist of the pursuit of personal excellence, meaning, authenticity, self-growth, cultivating personal strengths, and valued goals. Although previous research has studied these motives in Western and Eastern contexts, the current literature requires further research on well-being motives in non-Western contexts. This research aimed to investigate well-being motives within a Russian context, which is underrepresented in the litera-ture. Study 1 validates the HEMA-R among Russian-speaking people from different regions of Russia, revealing excellent fit indices in confirmatory factor analyses. Results demonstrate that both two-factor and three-factor solutions of the Russian HEMA-R are viable. Additionally, eudaimonic, hedonic pleasure, and hedonic comfort motives are linked to enhanced well-being outcomes. Study 2 replicates these findings in a larger sample. Both studies shed light on well-being motives and their associations among Russian people and highlight the distinct and complementary roles of these motives in nurturing well-being outcomes.

The essence of authentic pursuits: Intrinsic value-goal concordance matters

Goal self-concordance research has significantly grown in the past twenty-five years. Goal self-concordance is described as the congruence between an individual’s core values and selfset goals. The benefits of self-concordant goal selection and pursuit are well-documented. However, current research has not fully explored whether goal self-concordance represents intrinsic/healthy values such as self-transcendence and openness to change, and whether goal self-concordance mediates the effects of these values on well-being. This cross-sectional study attempts to address these gaps. A sample of 545 participants participated in the study, completing measures assessing personal values, goal self-concordance, need satisfaction, meaning in life, and life satisfaction. The results indicated that self-transcendence and openness to change were positively associated with well-being, with these relationships being significantly mediated by goal self-concordance. The findings provide evidence that the alignment of healthy values and goal self-concordance leads to beneficial outcomes in well-being. The study highlights the importance of value-goal concordance in fostering well-being and offers new directions for further research into value-based goal setting and achievement across diverse populations.

Algorithmic discrimination against women in the recruitment process

Prohibition of Discrimination in Employment: Although it is accepted that as a requirement of the principle of freedom of contract the employer has the freedom to choose the other party to the contract, modern legal systems have imposed certain limitations on this freedom. Indeed, one such limitation is the prohibition of discrimination. Therefore, employers cannot refrain from concluding an employment contract on the basis of discrimination ( , , Bozkurt Gümrükçüoğlu Yıldız 2008 Türe 2021 and Yakacak 2023). Antidiscrimination rules in recruitment protect human dignity (Straker 2024) and require that the entire process, commencing with the job advertisement, is conducted without risk of discrimination. For this reason, the language used in job advertisements should be independent of gender or other discriminatory elements (Karb 2024), and the selection process of candidates should be conducted in accordance with antidiscrimination laws. Since the prohibition of discrimination also constitutes a limit to the employer’s right to information, the employer’s right to ask questions cannot exceed the limits of this prohibition (Karb 2024). The same limit should be observed with regard to information obtained through methods that don’t involve asking the candidate, such as social media scans. The criteria used to select candidates should also not contain discriminatory elements. It should be noted that the prohibition of discrimination in access to employment should not be limited to the conclusion of the contract but should be evaluated together with other legal requirements. In this context, the employer must comply with the prohibition of discrimination, in particular when determining wages and work conditions (Karb 2024)...

Siberkondri düzeyinin sağlık kaygısı düzeyine etkisinde duygu düzenlemenin moderatör rolü

Dünya genelinde internet kullanımının artması birçok psikolojik sorunu da beraberinde getirmektedir. Giderek artan kaygı ve endişe ile birlikte aşırı ve tekrarlayan bir biçimde çevrimiçi sağlık bilgisi arama davranışı şeklinde tanımlanan siberkondri, bu sorunların başında gelmektedir. Siberkondri birçok fiziksel ve psikolojik etkisinin yanı sıra bireylerde düşük düzeydeki sağlık kaygısını arttırma potansiyeline de sahiptir. İlgili literatür incelendiğinde siberkondrinin sağlık kaygısını nasıl tetiklediği ya da düşük düzeydeki sağlık kaygısı düzeyini nasıl artırdığına ilişkin çalışmaların oldukça sınırlı olduğu görülmektedir. Mevcut çalışmada siberkondri düzeyinin sağlık kaygısı düzeyi üzerindeki etkisinde duygu düzenlemenin moderatör rolü incelenmiştir. Çalışmanın örneklemini internet kullanan ya da internete erişimi olan, çevrimiçi ortamda anket yanıtlayabilen, okuma yazma ve Türkçe bilen 18 yaş ve üzeri bireyler oluşturmaktadır.
