Equal before Allah, unequal before the prophet? Ongoing discourse on matn criticism and its influence on feminist Muslim thought [Conference Abstract]
(International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) / Department of Qur’an and Sunnah Studies, 2024) Abdullah, Nuzulul Qadar
İn recent years, the question of whether Müslim scholars critically evaluated mutun has sparked considerable scholarly interest, leading to a vigorous debate vvithin Islamic studies. Pioneering orientalists like Goldziher, Schacht, and Juynboll argued that early muhaddithin did not critically engage vvith mutun, focusing instead on rigorous scrutiny of asonid. Contemporary Müslim academics, such as Muştafâ al-Sibâ'i, Misfir al-Dumayni, and Tâhir al-Jawâbi, counterthis narrative by asserting that matn criticism has alvvays been integral to text verification in Islamic history. This perspective is further supported by Western scholars like Jonathan Brovvn, vvho discovered nevv data on early matn criticism. Other researchers have revisited the claims of early muhaddithin engaging in matn criticism, particularly after Mu’taz al-Khatib's doctoral research suggested that matn criticism was mainly the domain of the uşüliyyün. Conversely, Hatim al-'Awni argued that the methodologies of muhaddithin and uşüliyyün are complementary ratherthan opposing. İn the realm of Feminist Müslim thought, such divergent vievvs are often deemed to have limited influence. Feminist Müslim thinkers underscore a substantial lacuna in matn criticism, advocating for innovative approaches such as the tawhid\c paradigm and the ûur'anic-based value analysis. İn orderto provide a more nuanced analysis, this paper proposes a nevv categorization ot matn criticism, distinguishing betvveen /snöd-based matn criticism and text-based matn criticism. Utilising a qualitative research methodology, it elucidatesthat, although nevv evidence has been uncovered from the genre of "ılal and mowdü'ât, it is insufficientto conclusively affirm that matn criticism was employed as a methodology. The latter part explores the impact of classical matn criticism methodologies on contemporary feminist Müslim thought, analysing vvorksthe likes ofAmina Wadud, Riffat Hassan, HidayetTuksal. Significantly, this paper representsthe inaugural scholarly effort to comprehensively delineate and juxtapose contrasting perspectives on matn criticism, offering a unique contribution to the ongoing discourse.

Effects of ethical values on consumers’ green product purchase intentions. Mediating roles of egobiocentric values and green purchase behaviour. Moderating role of green price sensitivity
(Science, Technology and Engineering Conferences, 2025) Sonko, Mariama
The study aims to integrate the theory of planned behaviour and the Hunt-Vitell ethical theory to evaluate the effects of ethical values on Gambian consumers’ green product purchase intentions. Also, given the lack of clarity on least developed nations’ consumers’ intentionbehaviour gap, the study evaluates the mediating roles of green product purchase behaviour between green product purchase intentions and green product repurchase intention. Hence, by employing a structural equation modeling with a sample size of 300 Gambians, the findings reveal both deontological evaluations and teleological evaluations exerting positive and significant direct effects on consumers’ green product purchase intentions although the magnitude of the effects is higher with teleological evaluation to deontological evaluations. Further, the relationships between deontological evaluations, teleological evaluation, and green product purchase intention were found to be partially mediated by egobiocentric values. Similarly, green product purchase behaviour also partially mediated the relationship between green product purchase intention and green product repurchase intention. Besides, by evaluating the moderating roles of green price sensitivity between green product purchase intention and green product purchase behaviour, the results indicate green price sensitivity plays a significant moderating role, although the effect differs between high green price sensitive consumers and low green price sensitive consumers. Overall, the findings from the study provide useful insights on how green marketers can position their products in the market by communicating the ethical aspects of their products.

Ethical values and green purchase intentions: Mediating effects of egobiocentric values and green behavior
(Conscientia Beam, 2026) Sonko, Mariama; Arslan, Mahmut; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü
The study aims to integrate the theory of planned behavior and the Hunt-Vitell ethical theory to evaluate consumers' sustainable consumption behaviors and intentions in a least developed nation. Conducting a PLS-SEM analysis with a sample size of 300 Gambians, the findings revealed that deontological and teleological evaluations have positive and significant direct effects on consumers' green product purchase intentions. However, the magnitude of the impact was higher with teleological evaluations than with deontological evaluations. Furthermore, the relationships between deontological evaluations, teleological evaluations, and green product purchase intention were found to be partially mediated by egobiocentric values. Similarly, green purchase behavior also partially mediated the relationship between green product purchase intention and green product repurchase intention. Additionally, results from the multi-group analysis indicate that green price sensitivity does not significantly moderate the relationship between green product purchase intention and green purchase behavior. Based on the findings, the study suggests recommendations relevant to green businesses and policymakers. First, to capture the attention of green-oriented consumers, marketing managers should focus on the green features of their products to persuade consumers. Also, favorable policies from the government should be enacted to promote the competitiveness and operations of green businesses in this region.

Childhood trauma, dissociative experiences and ADHD symptoms in youth
(Elsevier, 2026) Songül, Derin; Ergün, Ahmet Faruk; Selman Adıyaman, Saliha Büşra; Yanık, Medaim; İnsan ve Toplum Bilimleri Fakültesi, Psikoloji Bölümü
Background: Trauma exposure and dissociative experiences can resemble attentiondeficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in adolescence, but it is unclear whether dissociation explains trauma-related attentional symptoms by diagnostic status. Methods: We enrolled 108 youth aged 12-18 years (54 with ADHD; 54 controls) from a child and adolescent psychiatry outpatient service in Türkiye. Youth completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) and Adolescent Dissociative Experiences Scale (A-DES); parents completed the Conners Parent Rating Scale-Revised Short Form (CPRS-RS). We estimated a multigroup path model (ADHD vs control) testing CTQ→A-DES (path a), A-DES→CPRSRS (path b), and CTQ→CPRS-RS (path c′), with 1000-draw bootstrap confidence intervals, adjusting for sex, internalizing symptoms, socioeconomic status, and number of children in the household. Indirect effects were interpreted as associational. Results: In controls, higher trauma was associated with higher dissociative experiences (a=0.529, p=0.005), and higher dissociative experiences were associated with ADHD-like symptoms (b=0.292, p<0.001). The indirect effect was significant (a×b=0.155, 95% CI 0.035-0.306; p=0.019). In the ADHD group, path a (0.163, p=0.153), path b (0.107, p=0.230), and the indirect effect (0.017, 95% CI -0.022 to 0.061; p=0.380) were not significant. Indirect effects differed between groups (Wald χ²(1)=4.54, p=0.033). Conclusions: Dissociative experiences were associated with trauma-related ADHD-like symptoms in adolescents without ADHD, but this pathway was not statistically supported in diagnosed ADHD, supporting trauma-informed assessment when attentional complaints arise without confirmed ADHD.

Mental health needs, stressors and coping resources of internally displaced children in post-conflict Syria: A qualitative study with NGO staff
(Cambridge University Press, 2026) Çakır Mete, Betül; Ergün, Ahmet Faruk; Şafak, Ayşe; İnsan ve Toplum Bilimleri Fakültesi, Psikoloji Bölümü
Although the needs of conflict-affected children are well-documented, research on the post-conflict period is limited, particularly in Syria, where the fall of the Assad regime has created a rapidly evolving environment for internally displaced children. This study explores how key informants perceive the mental health needs, daily stressors and coping strategies of internally displaced children during the post-regime period. Online semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 staff members from a non-governmental organization working in psychosocial support in the Syria camps. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Five major themes emerged: (1) stressors in the current camp environment, (2) challenges related to return, (3) observed emotional and behavioral difficulties, (4) children's psychological resources and (5) needs and gaps in support services. Findings highlight the inseparability of children's mental health from basic needs, the role of place-based attachments in return processes and the importance of a holistic approach that considers context-specific stressors and resources in this unique period.
