Structural transformation and youth employment crisis: Evidence from Ethiopia’s economic development (1999-2023)
(Ibn Haldun University Press, 2026) al-Ziyadi, Nuha; Abdul Rahman, Mohammed Muntaka
This study investigates the impact of structural transformation on youth employment in Ethiopia between 1999 and 2023. Using World Bank data, the analysis applies econometric approaches, including GMM and ARDL models, to examine the effects of sectoral employment shares, foreign direct investment, GDP per capita, urbanization, and a structural transformation index on youth employment outcomes. The findings reveal that industrial employment and overall economic growth contribute positively to youth job opportunities, while agricultural dependence, urbanization, and structural transformation pressures are associated with adverse effects. The service sector exhibits mixed results, with limited capacity to absorb youth labor despite its expansion. Further interaction analysis shows that foreign direct investment supports industrial employment but has negligible or negative effects in agriculture and services. Overall, the results highlight a disconnect between economic growth, investment inflows, and the ability of the labor market to absorb young workers. The study underscores the need for employment-centered development strategies, with a particular emphasis on labor-intensive industrialization and policies that better link investment to youth employment creation.
Istanbul: An early modern imperial capital and a world city
(Telemak Kitap, 2025) Faroqhi, Suraija Roschan; İnsan ve Toplum Bilimleri Fakültesi, Tarih Bölümü
In the present contribution, we discuss Istanbul not as a unique place, although the city certainly was unique in many respects. At the same time however, the Ottoman capital was an example of a special category, namely the center of an early modern empire. As other exemplars, we may name the central cities of the Mughal Empire (Shahjahanabad/Delhi, Agra, for a while Fatehpur Sikri, Lahore), or else the capital of a large and highly organized kingdom such as France…
A behaviorally informed multi-criteria framework for electric bus supplier selection: Integrating IDOCRIW and TODIM
(Sage Publications, 2026) Nebati, Emine Elif; Ayvaz, Berk; Bayraktar, Erkan; Eryarsoy, Enes; Zaim, Selim; Delen, Dursun; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü
The proliferation of motorized vehicles over the past century has significantly intensified environmental challenges, par-ticularly in densely populated urban areas. This study aims to identify the most appropriate electric bus (EB) supplierto support Istanbul’s sustainable public transportation goals. To account for both data-driven objectivity and behavioraldecision-making biases often present in procurement contexts, the study integrates a behavioral decision-making tech-nique (TODIM), grounded in Prospect Theory, with an objective Integrated Determination of Objective Criteria Weights(IDOCRIW). Applying the model to secondary data from Istanbul Electric Tram and Tunnel Enterprises (IETT), S1 wasranked as the top supplier with a normalized dominance score of 1.000, outperforming the second-best alternative (S2,0.865). The results demonstrate the robustness of the proposed model in effectively differentiating between supplieroptions using both objective and behaviorally sensitive criteria. These findings provide practical guidance to municipaltransportation authorities and policymakers seeking to reduce emissions and improve operational efficiency throughdata-informed EB procurement decisions. This study is the first to apply an integrated IDOCRIW-TODIM framework toelectric bus supplier selection, utilizing real operational data from a major emerging-market metropolis. It offers bothmethodological innovation and context-specific decision support, which are largely absent in the existing literature.
The impact of perceived usefulness and ease of use of AI on AI ethics maturity level: Evidence from Iran & Pakistan ICT sector
(Hellenic Association of Political Scientists, 2025) Arslan, Mahmut; Ghezel, Alireza; Tarabah, Nour El Hoda; Serevan, Bahar; Naqvi, Fariha; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü
This study investigates the relationships between Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU), Perceived Usefulness (PU), and AI Ethics Maturity (AIE) within the two groups selected from ICT sectors in emerging markets, specifically Pakistan and Iran. By utilizing a survey-based quantitative approach, the research explores how these factors influence the ethical adoption of AI technologies in the selected groups. A total of 206 respondents (103 from each group) participated, and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and regression models. The findings reveal a statistically significant positive relationship between PEOU and AIE, suggesting that easier-to-use AI systems contribute to enhanced ethical maturity. However, AI's perceived usefulness (PU) was not significantly correlated with AIE, highlighting that perceived utility alone does not drive ethical AI adoption. Additionally, a strong positive correlation was found between PEOU and PU. These findings underline the importance of user-friendly AI systems in promoting ethical AI practices while indicating that organizational and cultural factors may also play a pivotal role in shaping AI ethics maturity. This study contributes to the growing body of literature on AI ethics in emerging markets and provides valuable insights for policymakers and practitioners aiming to enhance AI adoption and governance.
