Inspirations for corporate sustainability from Umar ibn Al-Khattab’s administration
(2018) Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü
Throughout history, humankind had principally pursued basic principles in order to maintain agricultural, fiscal and social sustainability. To put it all in simple terms, these practices were centuries-long traditions, not sustainability efforts. By the time homo economicus appeared with an inevitable intention of profit-maximization, rules of the game have drastically changed. The world was riding to final destination at full speed and we launched the concept of sustainability as if it was totally brand-new approach. More precisely, even though sustainability as a modern phenomenon has its roots in 1970s, there exist writings and implications from history directly or indirectly addressing managerial sustainability. Among them, administrative implications of Umar ibn Al-Khattab who is the second Rightly Guided Caliph after Prophet Muhammad deserve a particular interest. He was accepted as the great-grandfather of Islamic administration, as he established the initial forms of divan, public treasury, court, land revenue department, police department, intelligence service, etc. in Islamic history. Originating from Al-Medina and Mecca in the Arabian Peninsula, in his reign Islam expanded to Iraq, Iran, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, North Africa and Armenia. Literature review revealed that Umar has not been adequately investigated in terms of his managerial efforts. This work firstly attempts to discover the moral and administrative principles on which Umar constructed a sustainable state structure. Besides the inspirations for the corporate sustainability from his practices will be discussed.

Ibn Haldun’s approach to sustainability: a function of spirituality and virtuousness
(İbn Haldun Üniversitesi, 2019) Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Kuşakcı, Sümeyye; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü
According to Ibn Haldun, royal authority is built up on group feeling (asabiyyah). Obtaining a powerful authority and being spread on a large geographical area require religious coloring. One of the main characteristics of people who have gained control over many lands is their eager desire for virtuous behavior specifically benevolence. Whenever they start to “commit blameworthy deeds and to practice all sorts of vices”, God deprives them of royal authority. This work firstly aims to develop a sustainability model based on Ibn Haldun’s teaching. Religious coloring refers to the spirituality, which is in fact rediscovered in modern ages and transferred to the workplace. Spirituality stimulates virtuousness at personal and organizational level, which in turn generates managerial sustainability meaning the lifespan of a company. While personal virtuousness refers social ethics, organizational level virtuousness could be considered as Corporate Social Responsibility. Briefly, managerial sustainability could be qualified as a function of spirituality, virtuousness and corporate social responsibility. Secondly, it attempts to evaluate the relevance of Ibn Haldun’s approach to contemporary business organizations. In order to demonstrate the relationship between spirituality, virtuousness, CSR, and sustainability; a statistical analysis among Corporate Knights’ Global 100 companies was conducted. The results of the study show; while workplace spirituality leads to ethical conduct and higher CSR/CS score, the relationship between spirituality or CSR and financial performance is not significant. However, it seems that lifespan of business enterprises is related to their CSR score. Companies that are promoting workplace spirituality, emphasizing ethical conduct and initiating socially responsible actions are living longer.
