Climate change induced political conflict and violence in greater Somalia
(İdeal Kent Yayınları, 2026) Kalmoy, Abdirashid Diriye; Hassan, Arab Dahir; Ibrahim, Mahat Maalim; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İktisat Bölümü
This study offers a critical climate history of the Somali civil war and how this political conflict proliferated to Somali inhabited regions of Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti and how it was exacerbated by earth aridity that occasioned famines and droughts. This study posits – as its thesis and argument – that climate change induced droughts and famines cause and exacerbate the perennial and recurring political conflicts and violence in Greater Somalia. Decreasing rainfalls and increasing aridity led to the shrinking of grazing pasturelands and tree cover in the Somali peninsula leading to massive dry earth lands. The consequences of these long abrupt dry spells of famines and droughts is both state institutions and communal vulnerabilities which translate to often violent contestations over the meagre pasturelands and water wells. Political conflict in the Somali world is invariably theorized and conceptualized to be predicated on clan and communal relations and the absence of effective state capacity in the face of clan militias and terror groups. This study argues that at the foundation of political conflict in the Somali peninsula is a climate change that disrupted centuries long pastoralist livelihoods and rendered the earth dry and destitute. This study employs a multi-disciplinary geospatial analysis framework to examine the ecological, climatic, and socio-political dynamics across Greater Somalia and depicts how tree cover change and climate variability overlap with (and translates to) conflict and violence patterns. The significance of this study is that if offers an analytical case of how aridity and dry earth occasioned by climate change lead to political conflicts and violence.

Phase-based psychotherapy as a treatment for dissociative identity disorder co-morbid with major depressive disorder
(John Wiley & Sons, 2023) Ergül, Hümeyra; Yanık, Medaim; Uysal, Burcu; İnsan ve Toplum Bilimleri Fakültesi, Psikoloji Bölümü
The single participant case study highlights the treatment and successful outcome of a 41-year-old Turkish female with a history of complex trauma presenting with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) and major depressive disorder and somatization. The treatment included a trauma-informed Phase-Based Psychotherapy (PBT) as recommended by the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation for treating DID. The patient required an intensive treatment plan for a number of reasons. I completed the treatment in 9 days with intensified interviews. However, there is no published study showing that PBT is being applied extensively. This study determines the efficacy of intensive PBT intervention on DID. Significant symptom improvements were realized post treatment across all measured domains of functioning, including dissociative symptoms, depression and wellbeing skills and somatization. Moreover, the client no longer met criteria for DID, major depressive disorder and somatization.

Islam and modern cosmology
(Cambridge University Press, 2026) Doko, Enis
Islam and Modern Cosmology examines how contemporary cosmological theories intersect with Islamic theology, exploring how modern science and Islamic thought can be brought into meaningful dialogue. It begins with a concise overview of modern cosmology, followed by an exploration of the Qur'an's cosmological perspectives and the philosophical models of creation proposed by Muslim thinkers, comparing these ideas with current scientific understandings. The discussion then considers the fine-tuning argument for God's existence and addresses the multiverse hypothesis, proposing that, under certain reasonable assumptions, the Islamic conception of God suggests the possibility of multiple universes. Finally, from a Muslim – specifically Sufi – perspective, it reflects on the problem of the significance of human life within this vast cosmos.

Institutional pressures on Waqf Unit Trust funds in Islamic social finance: The ASNB Wakalah Model for social and economic impact
(USIM Press, 2026) Sulaiman, Syahnaz; Ahmed, Habib; Hasbullah, Mushaddad; Gümüş, Nihat; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü
Waqf, as a perpetual charitable endowment, serves as a cornerstone for promoting social welfare and equitable wealth distribution within Islamic finance. Its integration into modern financial instruments, such as the Amanah Saham Nasional Berhad (ASNB) Wakalah Waqf Unit Trust, reflects a growing trend toward aligning Islamic capital market innovation with Islamic social finance objectives in Malaysia. This study examines the application of institutional theory in understanding the distribution of waqf benefits by ASNB Wakalah, focusing on how institutional pressures shape its governance, implementation, and social outcomes. Employing a qualitative document analysis approach, the research reviews policy documents, Islamic rulings (fatwas), prospectuses, annual reports, academic journals, books, and relevant online sources to evaluate ASNB’s waqf governance and distribution strategies. Despite ASNB’s pioneering role in developing a Wakalah-based waqf model, there remains limited scholarly attention to the institutional forces, such as regulatory frameworks, Shariah governance standards, and societal expectations that influence its operationalisation and impact. The findings reveal that ASNB’s waqf model is deeply embedded within Malaysia’s institutional environment, where compliance, legitimacy, and stakeholder expectations collectively shape its governance and distribution mechanisms. The study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on Islamic social finance and institutional theory. It also offers practical insights for policymakers and Islamic financial institutions to strengthen transparency, governance, and the social impact of waqf-based investment schemes in line with institutional norms, ethical investment principles and Maqasid al-Shariah (Shariah objectives).
