Language and identity in Turkey
(Routledge, 2026) Rouabah, Siham; Alpat, Muhammet Furkan; Rektörlük, Yabancı Diller Okulu
Globalisation has significantly altered perceptions of language and identity. However, some communities resist emerging language practices and their identity connotations. This paper examines how university students in Turkey navigate their national, ethnic, religious, and linguistic identities amidst globalisation and language commodification. Drawing on interview data, classroom observations, and field notes, we analyse 70 students' language attitudes and practices through a framework combining symbolic capital, chronotope, and identity. Findings show a robust reproduction of Turkish national and religious identities through language use and resistance to the cultural implications of English, even among non-Turkish individuals. The symbolic value of the Turkish language emerges as a resilient identity element against potential transitions, shaped by chronotopic positioning. The study contributes to sociolinguistic research by demonstrating how language value is recalibrated across time-space configurations in higher education settings.

Generation Z’s journey from value consciousness to store loyalty: Mediating roles of consumer satisfaction and store trust in private label retailing in an emerging economy
(Elsevier, 2026) Şahin, Aysun; Elçi, Meral; Tatoğlu, Ekrem; Zaim, Selim; Şahin, Azize; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İşletme Bölümü
This study investigates the psychological and relational pathways through which Generation Z consumers’ value consciousness fosters store loyalty toward private labels (PLs) in Turkey’s hard-discount retail sector. Grounded in social exchange theory (SET), the study explores the dual mediating roles of consumer satisfaction and store trust in shaping store loyalty. Using a robust sample of 1,505 Generation Z consumers and partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM), the findings demonstrate that consumer value consciousness positively influences consumer satisfaction and store trust, which jointly mediate the pathway to store loyalty. These results provide empirical insights into the complex behaviors of Generation Z consumers in emerging markets, offering actionable guidance for retailers to align their PL strategies with this cohort’s value-driven preferences. The study’s findings contribute to both theoretical advancements in SET and practical applications in loyalty-building strategies, emphasizing the role of psychological and relational factors in sustaining competitive advantage.

A performance-based assessment of Turkish private pension funds: Efficiency, scale economies, and competitiveness
(Palgrave Macmillan, 2026) Verberi, Can; Kaplan, Muhittin; Ökte, Mehmet Kutluğhan Savaş; Yönetim Bilimleri Fakültesi, İktisat Bölümü
This study evaluates the performance of private pension providers via three dimensions-efficiency, economies of scale, and competitive structure-of the private pension sector in Türkiye using a multi-method approach. The study employs a three-stage approach: data envelopment analysis to measure technical efficiency, Tobit regression to identify determinants, and the Panzar–Rosse model and Herfindahl-Hirschman Index to assess market structure. The analysis utilises firm-level panel data from 21 pension companies over 2013–2022. The empirical findings reveal that larger firm size is associated with improved efficiency, although diminishing returns emerge at higher asset scales. Financial profitability enhances technical efficiency, whereas a higher equity ratio and investment in both interestbearing and interest-free financial instruments reduce it. The results indicate limited competition in a monopolistic or collusive market structure, which, paradoxically, is linked to improved technical efficiency by allowing managers to better exploit strategic advantages.
